This transparent 1.77 carat cushion shape purplish red almandine garnet presents a compelling combination of color, clarity, and cut, making it an attractive choice for the educated buyer. The stone measures 8.52 by 5.61 by 3.87 mm, and its mixed brilliant cut is expertly executed to maximize both color saturation and light return. The color intensity is described as intense, with a rich purplish red face up that balances warmth and depth, and the polish is excellent, producing lively reflections and a smooth, clean surface. The clarity grade is very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, which indicates that the gem reads as very clean to most observers while retaining the natural inclusions that confirm its authenticity. There has been no enhancement, the gem is untreated, and its origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a region historically renowned for producing high quality garnets and other classic gem materials.
The journey of this garnet from mine to market reflects careful selection and traditional craftsmanship combined with modern quality control. The rough was sourced from the gem fields near Ratnapura in Sri Lanka, where skilled small scale miners work alluvial deposits and bedrock seams to recover individual crystals. From the point of extraction the rough was hand selected for color and transparency, and it passed through local trading networks to reach a cutter who specializes in garnet proportions. The decision to execute a cushion outline with a mixed brilliant faceting pattern was made to conserve weight while optimizing the stone for face up color and scintillation, a common approach when working with richly colored materials that benefit from both broad facets and precise brilliant facet geometry. Following cutting and preform evaluation, the stone received an exacting polish that yields an excellent finish, and it was then graded by our gemology team for color, clarity, and measurements. Throughout this process The Natural Gemstone Company maintained documentation of origin and treatment status so that the final piece can be presented with confidence to discerning clients who value traceability and natural, untreated material.
For the buyer who understands what distinguishes a fine garnet, several technical qualities make this specimen noteworthy and valuable. Almandine garnet is prized for its strong luster and relatively high refractive power, which translate into vivid presence and a lively play of light when the cut is well proportioned. The very slightly included clarity grade, evaluated at eye level, means the stone remains visually clean and appealing in hand, while natural inclusions provide reliable identification features for gemological verification. The mixed brilliant cut on a cushion outline maintains depth and color richness by allowing the pavilion and crown facet structure to complement one another, creating both strong brilliance and a saturated, stable face up color. The size and weight, 1.77 carat with the given dimensions, offer substantial visual impact for jewelry, and the fact that the gem is untreated enhances its rarity and desirability among collectors and connoisseurs. This garnet is well suited to a variety of settings, from an elegant three stone ring to a classic solitaire pendant, and it is hardy enough for frequent wear when set responsibly by a competent jeweler. The Natural Gemstone Company is prepared to provide detailed images, additional measurements, and provenance information on request, and we welcome inquiries from clients who would like bespoke mounting options or independent laboratory documentation.
