Product description

This transparent rainbow moonstone weighs 0.35 carat, and presents as an oval shape precisely measured at 4.78 by 4.18 by 3.33 millimeters, with a mixed brilliant cut that has been selected to balance adularescence and overall light return. The table and crown facets are arranged to emphasize the internal schiller that gives rainbow moonstone its characteristic flashes, while the pavilion facet set is engineered to preserve brilliance through careful light reflection. Clarity grade is very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, a condition that confirms natural internal structure without visible detriment to face up appearance. Color intensity is light, an attribute that enhances the visibility of spectral play rather than masking it, and polish is excellent across every facet plane, allowing crisp edge definition and minimal light scatter from surface irregularities. There has been no enhancement applied to this gem, and origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a classic source for fine feldspar specimens. The Natural Gemstone Company presents this gem with full technical transparency, and with attention to both gemological grading and lapidary provenance.

On a lapidary level the mixed brilliant configuration here consists of a brilliant style crown paired with a more restrained pavilion, a deliberate choice to maximize the adularescent sheet of light that travels near the interface of microscopic layers. The cutter oriented the gem so that the lamellar axis of the feldspar aligns perpendicular to the table, this orientation produces a sliding sheen when the stone is moved under directional illumination. Facet junctions are crisp, and crown angle relationships were adjusted during preform work to maintain an optimal table to depth ratio for this size, preserving face up area while avoiding windowing on the pavilion. Girdle thickness has been managed to industry tolerances for small ovals, supporting secure setting without excess material loss, and proportion control was critical given the small dimensions. The excellent polish was achieved using progressive abrasives and final surface refinement, resulting in mirror like facets that reveal the internal adularescence with no surface haze, a result that is especially important in transparent rainbow moonstone where internal layering and transparency interact.

The geological story of this moonstone spans millions of years, beginning with alkali rich feldspathic crystallization within Sri Lanka complex metamorphic terrain, and continuing through thermal events that promoted exsolution and lamellar unmixing at the nanoscale. During cooling, alternating sodium rich and potassium rich feldspar layers separated into thin platelets, creating a finely spaced lamellar microstructure that scatters and diffracts incident light, producing the blue white to multicolored sheen known as adularescence and the rainbow flashes that give this variety its name. Subsequent tectonic uplift and prolonged weathering liberated crystals from host veins and pegmatites, concentrating many gems into alluvial deposits where traditional miners recovered individual crystals. Over geological time frames the crystal experienced low strain preservation, which supports the current transparency and clarity level, while microscopic polysynthetic twinning and thin film boundaries remain as internal features that sustain the optical phenomenon rather than weaken the material structurally.

For the buyer versed in technical details, this piece is attractive for its exacting proportions and for how natural internal textures are showcased by the cutter, it is best set with the table oriented to face the primary viewing direction so that adularescence can be read under movement and under mixed lighting, and a bezel or secure prong setting that permits light ingress from the sides will encourage the spectral flashes. The very slightly included grade, evaluated at eye level, indicates that internal features are typical of feldspar based moonstones and do not compromise toughness for normal wear in jewelry, while the absence of enhancement assures collectors that surface and internal optical effects are entirely natural. For design suggestions choose metals and settings that allow dynamic motion when worn, this will animate the adularescence and reveal the stone as both a gemological specimen and a wearable jewel. The Natural Gemstone Company offers this rainbow moonstone with full documentation of weight, dimensions, cut type, clarity assessment, color intensity, polish grade, enhancement status, and origin, and we are available to discuss mounting considerations and certification for discerning clients.
