This 0.53 carat marquise alexandrite begins its story deep within the ancient gem-bearing gravels of Ceylon Sri Lanka, where monsoon-fed rivers and weathered bedrock mingled over millennia to concentrate chromium rich chrysoberyl crystals. We at The Natural Gemstone Company selected this particular crystal for its transparent body and remarkable dichroic temperament, and handed it to a master cutter who fashioned a mixed brilliant marquise measuring 7.65 x 3.70 x 2.81 mm. The cutting preserves weight while maximizing color play, so that under daylight the stone reads as a clear greenish blue and under incandescent or warm light it shifts to a vibrant reddish pink. Its clarity is graded very slightly included when evaluated at eye level which gives the gem a natural character without compromising brilliance, its color intensity is intense, the polish excellent, and there has been no enhancement applied, leaving you a completely natural testament to Ceylonese gemcraft.
Compared to classic Ural Russian alexandrite which is famed for its deep velvety green that turns to a strong raspberry red, this Sri Lankan example offers a fresher, more oceanic greenish blue in neutral light and a livelier, rose to reddish pink in warm light, creating a lighter tonal personality that feels modern and wearable. Versus many Brazilian alexandrites which sometimes carry warmer olive or brownish undertones and a subtler red change, this Ceylon gem shows a cleaner blue green and a clearer pink red, making the transition more pronounced and pleasing to the eye. When placed alongside recent finds from Madagascar that often exhibit vivid teal to pink shifts, this stone holds its own with an elegant balance between blue and green on one hand and a saturated pink red on the other, while the marquise shape and mixed brilliant facets add a distinctive flash and elongation that different cuts cannot match. As a piece set in a delicate ring or as the centerpiece of a pendant, this alexandrite will tell a story of island geology, skilled hands, and thoughtful design, and it arrives to you as a natural rarity from The Natural Gemstone Company, ready to become an heirloom.
