From the highland rivers of Ceylon, where soft monsoon rains shape the terrain and ancient rock veins breathe with hidden light, this moonstone began its journey. Local hands, steeped in generations of gem lore, found the rough in pockets of weathered pegmatite, where feldspar crystals slowly grew over millennia. Each rough piece carried the quiet memory of its birthplace, layers of structure that catch and scatter light, a story written in the stone itself. At The Natural Gemstone Company we feel a connection to that story, we respect the provenance and the people who first uncovered this gem, and we honor the passage from wild stone to wearable art. This grey moonstone, translucent and alive with a subtle inner glow, is a testament to Ceylon, where moonstones have long been admired in local traditions for their calm and reflective beauty.
The stone that reached our workshop weighs 9.31 carat, and measures 15.93 x 12.48 x 7.02 mm, oval in outline and shaped as a classic cabochon to celebrate the light within. Its clarity is graded slightly included at eye level, which gives the surface a lived in texture that enhances the play of light rather than obscuring it. The color intensity is intense, a soft grey that shifts with viewing angle and light source, revealing flashes of cooler blue and silvery sheen beneath the surface. An excellent polish brings a glass like finish to the dome, allowing adularescence to glide across the surface when the stone is turned. No enhancement has been applied, this moonstone arrives to you in natural condition, its tones and internal character exactly as nature intended. The cabochon cut is an invitation to touch, a bowl of light that sits peacefully on the skin and invites prolonged notice.
In our lapidary studio we took care to preserve the stone s origin and to amplify its natural strengths. The cutter oriented the cabochon to follow the feldspar flow, enhancing the schiller so that the flash reads as a rounded band of light instead of a fragmented shimmer. The result is a gem that is both intimate and commanding, suitable for a ring with protective mounting, a pendant that rests near the heart, or a bespoke pair of earrings that pair with both evening wear and casual dressing. Each step of the finishing process at The Natural Gemstone Company was guided by respect for traditional craft and modern standards of precision, so that the final piece speaks with clarity about its history, its geological lineage, and the hands that refined it. Owning this moonstone is to carry a piece of Ceylon s quiet geology, a small companion that reflects moods and light throughout daily life.
When considering durability it is important to know where moonstone sits on the Mohs scale, and how that affects daily wear. Moonstone rates about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it is softer than quartz at 7, and softer still than topaz at 8, sapphire at 9, and diamond at 10. This level of hardness makes moonstone suitable for many types of jewelry, but it does require thoughtful settings and care to maintain its polish and sheen. For rings we recommend protective designs such as bezels or partially enclosed settings that shield the cabochon from direct knocks. For pendants and earrings the stone is less exposed, which helps preserve the surface. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaning, avoid harsh chemicals, and store the moonstone separately to prevent abrasion from harder gems. With mindful wear and simple care this 9.31 carat grey moonstone will reward you with its soft radiance for years, a durable reminder of the Ceylon earth from which it came, and a piece crafted with care by The Natural Gemstone Company.
