Product description

This parcel presents a single transparent alexandrite weighing 5.29 carat, fashioned into a cushion outline with exact dimensions of 9.94 x 9.85 x 5.49 mm, offered by The Natural Gemstone Company. The cutting style is a mixed brilliant cut, executed with a brilliant facet architecture on the crown and a step or modified pavilion arrangement beneath, designed to marry broad flash with controlled light return. Clarity is graded very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, which in practical terms yields an essentially eye clean performance with minute natural inclusions that do not impede light transmission. Color intensity is described as intense, and polish is graded excellent, indicating sharply defined facet junctions and a high quality surface finish. Enhancement is none, and origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a provenance that often yields alexandrites with a brighter green under daylight and a warmer red or orange shift under incandescent light.

The defining optical behavior of this gem is its greenish to orangish color change, a spectral shift controlled by chromium trace elements within the chrysoberyl crystal lattice. In neutral daylight the dominant hue registers greenish, with saturation pushed toward the intense band, producing a vivid, cool tonality. Under tungsten or incandescent illumination the stone shifts to an orangish hue, retaining saturation and gaining warmth without losing brilliance. This particular specimen exhibits a pronounced and balanced hue shift, rather than a muted or muddy change, which speaks to both the chromium concentration and the lack of significant color zoning. Compared to classic Russian alexandrites that characteristically move from bluish green to raspberry red, this Ceylon material favors slightly warmer shifts, which collectors value for their lively orange red responses under artificial light. In comparison to other color change species in the market, such as color change garnet or color change sapphire, this chrysoberyl displays more stable hue integrity across viewing angles, owing to the strong selective absorption bands that define alexandrite type color change.

Reflective qualities of this cushion mixed brilliant alexandrite stem from an interplay of refractive index, facet geometry, and surface finish. Chrysoberyl generally exhibits an adamantine to vitreous lustre and a refractive index that is higher than common gem species such as quartz or beryl, which yields excellent light return and surface brilliance. The cutter has optimized pavilion angles and crown geometry to work with that refractive index, prioritizing return of broad, even flashes rather than excessive small facet scintillation, which suits the cushion outline. Because chrysoberyl has low dispersion relative to diamond, fire or spectral color flashes are subdued, but the strong body color and precise facet placement here create conspicuous, saturated flashes of color change that read as visual dynamism rather than classic fire. When compared to other alexandrites, this stone reflects light with a slightly broader flash pattern and fewer pinprick scintillations, a result of the mixed brilliant design that balances depth and face up spread. Against color change garnets, which can show very vivid hue shifts but often with more extinction because of higher tone, this alexandrite offers superior clarity and a more controlled, jewelry friendly reflective pattern. Versus synthetic alexandrites or glass simulants, the natural stone demonstrates more complex internal reflections, subtle anisotropic behavior and pleochroic responses that are detectable in motion and that contribute to the perception of depth.

Craftsmanship and practical considerations complete the assessment of this gem, and they are relevant to both connoisseurs and buyers seeking technical assurance. The cushion shape at the stated dimensions provides a significant face up area for its carat weight, allowing the intense color to dominate the viewer experience while maintaining comfortable table proportions. The excellent polish and careful facet symmetry reduce light leakage at facet junctions and enhance satiny highlights along the crown facets, which accentuate the color change under varying light types. The very slightly included clarity grade means the inclusions are small and well placed, not interfering with the optical pathways that produce the color change phenomenon. The lack of any enhancement preserves natural clarity and color relationships, and the Ceylon provenance is consistent with the observed hue tendencies. For setting, a design that secures the girdle and allows for exposure to both natural and incandescent light will best showcase the bi spectral behavior, while a bezel or protective prong architecture will guard against potential knocks without compromising light interaction. The Natural Gemstone Company presents this alexandrite as a technically refined example of Ceylon material, suitable for collectors who favor precise cutting, notable color change, and unenhanced natural origin.
