This entry from The Natural Gemstone Company is a one point six eight carat red almandine garnet, presented in a round shape with precise dimensions of 6.95 x 6.96 x 4.51 mm. The stone is transparent and faceted with a mixed brilliant cut, offering a balance between table sparkle and pavilion refraction. Clarity has been evaluated at eye level as very very slightly included, indicating minimal internal features that do not detract from overall visual appeal. Color intensity is vivid, delivering a deep, saturated red that remains consistent across the crown and pavilion facets. The polish has been assessed as excellent, and the gemstone has received no enhancement. Origin is Mozambique, and this specimen has been selected and documented by The Natural Gemstone Company according to our standard quality procedures.
The geological narrative of this almandine garnet spans hundreds of millions of years. The original material was an aluminous sediment or volcanic protolith deposited in a marine basin. Over geologic time, that protolith was buried beneath additional sedimentary layers and subjected to increasing temperature and pressure during a regional tectonic event. In the Mozambique region, this burial and compression coincided with orogenic processes that remobilized heat and fluids within the crust. Under these conditions, the chemical constituents necessary for almandine growth, principally iron and aluminum combined with silica and oxygen, became mobile and concentrated in particular microscale chemical environments. Small nuclei formed in the host rock and served as templates for crystal growth, with the garnet lattice progressively incorporating iron and aluminum as the crystal matured. This process of nucleation and growth occurred over a protracted interval, during which slow diffusion and successive stages of metamorphism allowed the crystal faces to develop with the symmetry and stability characteristic of garnet. The result is a well formed crystal that later emerged through uplift and erosion, where it was liberated from its host and eventually recovered by miners in Mozambique.
At a mineralogical level, almandine is an iron rich aluminium silicate, and the deep red hue of this specimen derives from the specific electronic behavior of iron within the crystal lattice. Iron ions occupying octahedral sites interact with light in a manner that absorbs in the green to blue portion of the spectrum, leaving the observed red to deep red transmission and reflection. The mixed brilliant cut applied to this material was selected to maximize both color saturation and light return, with a carefully proportioned crown to preserve the vivid tone while a faceted pavilion contributes brilliance and scintillation. The clarity designation of very very slightly included reflects the presence of minute growth related features that are perceptible under magnification but are unobtrusive at normal viewing distances. These internal characteristics are typical of natural garnets and provide a fingerprint of geologic origin without compromising structural integrity. The absence of enhancement means the color and clarity are entirely natural attributes of the crystal, unchanged by heat treatment, dyeing, fracture filling, or other common interventions.
For practical use, this almandine garnet offers reliable performance in many fine jewelry applications due to its combination of durability, optical appeal, and measured dimensions. Almandine garnet typically registers near seven to seven and a half on the Mohs scale of hardness, providing good resistance to everyday wear when set with appropriate protective settings. The round one point six eight carat format and six point nine five by six point nine six by four point five one millimeter proportions are well suited to solitaire rings, stud earrings, and pendant settings where the mixed brilliant cut can be appreciated. Routine care consists of gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and sudden thermal shocks. The Natural Gemstone Company documents each specimen with its origin, measurements, and assessment so that clients can make informed decisions based on transparent technical information. This garnet represents a natural product of deep time, a gem that records a long history of Earth processes while offering consistent physical and optical qualities for contemporary use.
