From the rugged highlands of Madagascar to the refined light of a jewelers loupe, this 3.20 carat oval amethyst tells a story of earth and craft. Formed over millions of years within silica rich veins, its deep purple arrives when trace iron and natural irradiation meet in quartz ordered lattice, producing a color intensity that is both regal and vibrant. Carefully extracted by skilled miners and hand sorted by our team, the rough crystal was chosen for its transparency and structural integrity. At The Natural Gemstone Company our lapidaries then planned a mixed brilliant oval, measuring 10.40 by 8.57 by 6.14 millimeters, to respect the inherent shape of the gem while maximizing face up color and light performance. The result is a transparent, intense purple gem with very very slightly included clarity at eye level, an excellent polish, no enhancements, and an oval silhouette that flatters both modern and classic settings.
The sparkle you see comes from internal structure of the gem and the precise geometry created by the cutter. Quartz crystallizes in a trigonal lattice, giving a stable medium index of refraction that returns light with a warm, glass like luster, and the mixed brilliant cut uses a brilliant style crown paired with a faceted pavilion to create layers of reflection and scintillation. Each crown facet catches light and breaks it into flashes across the table, while the pavilion facets act as mirrors, sending light back through the intense purple body color, making each flash appear fuller and more saturated than in a step cut of similar tone. Minor inclusions are positioned and polished out of direct light paths, so they do not interrupt the lively play of the gem. The excellent polish sharpens facet junctions, increasing contrast and crispness of sparkle, and the oval outline offers a generous face up area so the jewel reads larger than its carat weight might suggest. This Madagascar amethyst by The Natural Gemstone Company is an heirloom ready stone, destined to breathe life into a bespoke ring or pendant, a gemstone that still carries the memory of the earth where it began.
