This lot presents a single transparent 36.70 carat oval amethyst, precisely measured at 26.89 x 19.16 x 11.05 mm, cut in a mixed brilliant style to optimize both scintillation and color saturation. The mixed brilliant configuration combines a faceted crown with a modified pavilion to deliver controlled light return and lively internal flash, the table to depth balance preserving a vivid color intensity while minimizing washout. Clarity is graded very very slightly included at eye level, indicating eye clean appearance with only minor pinpoint or needle inclusions visible under magnification, and the polish is excellent, producing sharp facet junctions and a bright vitreous luster. The material is heat treated to stabilize and homogenize the purple hue, a standard and reversible enhancement used in Brazilian amethysts to reduce zoning and enhance uniformity. Optical parameters of quartz family material apply, including a refractive index near 1.544 to 1.553, low dispersion around 0.013, uniaxial negative optic sign, and a Mohs hardness of 7, all contributing to durable wearability and predictable faceting response.
In hue and tone this Brazilian amethyst displays a vivid, medium to medium dark purple with a balanced mix of red and blue secondary components, producing a rich saturated appearance that differs subtly from other notable sources. Compared to Uruguayan amethysts the tone here is slightly lighter and more uniformly vivid rather than the deeper, often bluish violet that Uruguay is known for. Compared to classic Siberian or Russian amethysts which historically show a strong red secondary giving a velvety deep purple, this Brazilian example is brighter and more transparent, offering greater brilliance and less of the pinfire darkness. Compared to Zambian material which can exhibit a cooler, more bluish purple, the present gem leans marginally warmer while retaining brisk clarity and strong saturation. When considered for paired settings, the amethyst pairs exceptionally well with White Opal as a complementary stone, the opal type White Opal contributing a soft, diffuse body color and play of color that offsets the amethysts transparent, mixed brilliant sparkle. The Natural Gemstone Company offers this specimen for collectors and designers who prioritize cut quality, stable vivid color, and the provenance and size advantages that Brazilian rough can provide.
