Product description

This carnelian presents as a translucent pear shaped cabochon weighing 5.82 carats, with finished dimensions of 14.00 by 10.16 by 5.78 millimeters. The color reads as a balanced reddish orange with medium color intensity, and the cabochon surface displays an excellent polish and smooth dome. Clarity is graded as eye clean at typical viewing distance, with no apparent inclusions to the unaided eye that interrupt the color field or surface finish. The piece originates from Brazil and has undergone a dye treatment to stabilize and enhance its color uniformity, a common and accepted enhancement for material of this type. For reference and comparison in listings, the opal type noted on this item set is White Opal, also referred to as Light Opal, which denotes a light body tone that can exhibit play of color when present.

The formation narrative for this carnelian begins in a geologic environment shaped by volcanic activity and silica rich hydrothermal systems millions of years ago. Silica laden fluids percolated through fractures and cavities in host rock, precipitating microcrystalline quartz in a colloidal gellike phase. Over long periods, slow deposition and recrystallization of fine fibrous chalcedony produced the dense, microcrystalline structure characteristic of carnelian and other chalcedony varieties. Iron bearing minerals and their oxides were incorporated into the silica matrix during or after silica deposition, and the presence and oxidation state of those iron species are responsible for the warm reddish orange hues seen in this specimen. Subsequent burial, slight metamorphism, and gradual exposure through erosion consolidated the material, rendering a stable, translucent stone suitable for lapidary work. The original color in natural carnelian can be variable and subtle, and modern dye treatments are sometimes applied to enhance tone and uniformity, as is the case with this particular gem.

The cabochon cutting style was chosen to best display the stone’s even color and translucency, providing a smooth, reflective surface that emphasizes the depth of tone and the internal glow of the material. The pear shape and measured proportions, combined with the excellent polish, make this specimen suitable for bezel settings and designs that benefit from a domed face to capture light evenly. Physically, carnelian typically reports a Mohs hardness in the neighborhood of 6.5 to 7, which gives it reasonable resistance to wear for most jewelry applications, while remaining easier to shape and polish than many harder gem materials. Buyers should note that the dye treatment alters the long term color stability relative to natural untreated material, and practical care is advised, including avoidance of strong solvents, prolonged exposure to household chemicals, and aggressive ultrasonic cleaning that may affect the dye. By contrast, White Opal, or Light Opal, is noted for a lighter body tone and a potential for play of color, although it is generally softer and more sensitive to dehydration and thermal shock, and different conservation measures apply.
