This chrysoberyl began its journey in the pegmatitic and alluvial deposits of Madagascar, sourced from artisanal extraction operations where selectivity and hand sorting are integral to conserving crystal integrity. Miners extract nodules and vein fragments by controlled digging and sluicing, then pass rough material to regional sort houses for initial grading. At the sort house experienced eyes separate pieces showing translucency and potential for optical phenomena, because cat eye chrysoberyls are rare and their value hinges on the alignment and density of microscopic inclusions. The rough for this cabochon was chosen for its uniform brownish yellow tone and for a consistent internal alignment of acicular inclusions that promised a strong single band of light. The Natural Gemstone Company adheres to traceable sourcing, so each parcel is catalogued at origin, photographed, and accompanied by documented handling from mine to cutter, ensuring provenance and ethical compliance for the finished gem.
During the lapidary phase the rough was oriented and preformed to maximize chatoyancy and color uniformity, the cutter aligning the dome axis perpendicular to the inclusion direction so that reflected light would concentrate into a single sharp band. The decision to execute a round cabochon shape was driven by the inclusion geometry and by the desire to produce a stable, wearable stone that displays a continuous eye under varied lighting. The final dimensions are 6.50 by 6.11 by 4.75 mm, with a weight of 1.75 carat, a profile that balances dome height and pavilion thickness to sustain the optical effect while avoiding thin edges that would diminish structural integrity. Clarity is graded very slightly included at eye level, a typical and acceptable condition for chrysoberyl cat eyes where acicular inclusions create the phenomenon. Color is medium in intensity, a brownish yellow that reads warm and earthy, and the polish is excellent, yielding a smooth, glassy surface that enhances the sharpness and definition of the cat eye. There has been no enhancement to this material, the optical behavior is native, and the cutting and finishing were performed to retain the natural character of the stone.
The cat eye effect or chatoyancy in this chrysoberyl arises from tightly parallel, needle like inclusions within the crystal lattice, inclusions that act collectively as a single planar reflector when illuminated. Light incident on the dome is scattered and reflected preferentially along the plane formed by these aligned inclusions, producing a concentrated band of light that appears to glide across the surface as the viewing angle or light source changes. In this specimen the band is centrally placed and relatively narrow, a consequence of good inclusion parallelism and the chosen dome curvature, producing a crisp and well defined line of light with a silky texture. Under directional lighting the band contrasts against the brownish yellow body color, appearing brighter and slightly more yellow than adjacent areas because of localized light concentration. When the stone is rotated the band remains coherent and translates smoothly across the dome, a sign of both high quality inclusion alignment and precision in cabochon execution. The optical effect is strongest when the band is orthogonal to the observer line of sight, and the gem performs predictably in both natural and artificial light, making it suitable for designs that emphasize movement and spectacle.
From final inspection the gem is packaged with a detailed description of the cut and grading, and with provenance documentation from Madagascar, prepared by The Natural Gemstone Company as part of our quality assurance and customer transparency program. For setting we recommend a low bezel or a secure collet that preserves the dome silhouette and allows controlled light entry across the top of the cabochon, because overbearing prongs or deep settings can occlude the band. The medium intensity brownish yellow body color complements warm gold alloys and can provide a compelling contrast in cooler metals when set with complementary accent stones. Care is straightforward, routine cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush followed by gentle drying preserves the excellent polish, avoiding harsh ultrasonic or steam treatments because of the internal inclusions. For collectors who appreciate the technical aspects of optical gems this 1.75 carat round cabochon presents a rare combination of disciplined inclusion structure, balanced proportions, and a sharp, mobile cat eye, and The Natural Gemstone Company stands ready to provide additional imagery, lighting studies, and mounting recommendations to ensure this chrysoberyl performs optimally in its final design.
