Product description

This translucent multi color crystal opal presents as a round cabochon weighing 2.87 carats, with exact dimensions of 10.77 x 10.77 x 5.25 mm. Classified as a fire opal type within the crystal opal family, this piece displays the characteristic warm play of color associated with fire opals while retaining the clarity and internal transparency of a jelly opal. The cutting style is cabochon, selected to maximize the internal diffraction of light rather than introduce facet reflections. Clarity is graded eye clean at standard viewing distance, confirming an absence of inclusions that disrupt the visual scope of the play of color. Color intensity is evaluated as medium, giving balanced saturation that allows both body color and spectral flashes to remain distinct. The polish is excellent, executed to a smooth, high gloss finish that enhances light entry and exit without obscuring internal color dynamics. The origin is Ethiopia, sourced from the country known for producing crystal and jelly opals with vigorous play of color. Enhancement is nil, this gem is untreated, preserving natural hydration and surface integrity.

On a microstructural level this gem owes its optical behavior to an orderly arrangement of submicron silica spheres that act as a three dimensional diffraction grating. The cabochon dome, with a height of 5.25 mm, was oriented and cut to align the plane of maximal silica ordering perpendicular to the viewer, producing broad, clean flashes of color rather than fragmented pinfire. The term multi color describes the observed spectrum which includes warm orange and red flashes typical of fire opal material along with intermittent green and blue flashes that emerge as the viewing angle changes. Medium body color intensity ensures that neither the body tone nor the spectral colors overpower one another, enabling crisp transition of hues. Translucency allows internal light transmission which deepens perceived color with viewing depth, while the eye clean clarity ensures the play of color appears uninterrupted across the table and dome. The round outline is symmetrical to within tight tolerances, contributing to uniform light behavior around the entire perimeter of the stone.

Craftsmanship details begin with selection of rough material that exhibited a promising concentration of play of color and sufficient thickness to permit a well proportioned cabochon. Preforming was performed to establish a true round outline and to center the strongest color band near the table. Grinding stages refined radii and dome curvature while incremental grit changes removed subsurface strain and micro chipping. Final shaping was followed by polishing using fine abrasives and polishing compound to achieve the excellent polish grade reported. No stabilization resin or other enhancement was applied, therefore the cutter paid particular attention to avoid surface stress and excessive heat during polishing to maintain the gemaceous water content and internal structure. The cabochon form was chosen intentionally, because opal color phenomena are best showcased by smooth convex geometry which allows internal diffraction to be viewed across a continuous surface. Girdle thickness was maintained to provide mechanical durability without adding unnecessary weight, a critical balance for cabochon cutting of delicate silica based gemstones.

The journey of this gemstone from highlands of Ethiopia to the secure inventory of The Natural Gemstone Company involved artisanal extraction, careful field sorting, laboratory evaluation, and skilled lapidary work. Local miners recovered suitable opal nodules from silica rich host strata, these were then examined for color play and translucency, and selectively purchased under traceable sourcing protocols. Each rough piece underwent optical inspection and mapping of color zones prior to cabochon orientation, to ensure the finished gem would present optimal color at face up positions typical in jewelry settings. After cutting and polish the gem was inspected for optical performance, measured precisely, and documented with weight, dimensions, clarity grade, color intensity assessment, cut style, polish grade, enhancement declaration, and origin notation. The Natural Gemstone Company performed final quality control and ensured adherence to untreated disclosure, then packaged the gem for sale with handling and care recommendations. For optimal wearing longevity we recommend a bezel or low profile protective setting that supports the girdle and minimizes exposure to sharp blows and prolonged heat. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged exposure to solvents, and store with moderate humidity to guard against dehydration related surface crazing. For collectors and connoisseurs seeking an Ethiopian crystal fire opal with transparent to translucent jelly characteristics, precise proportions, and uncompromised natural state, this 2.87 carat round cabochon represents a technically refined example, available through The Natural Gemstone Company.
