From the earth to your hand, this ring begins its story deep in the alluvial deposits of Cambodia, where a rare greenish blue zircon was discovered, a stone that immediately called to our cutters with its vivid color saturation and transparent clarity. We at The Natural Gemstone Company watched this crystal as it emerged from the wash, noting its promising rough form and imagining the life it would lead under the touch of a master cutter. The rough was set aside for careful planning, each orientation and potential yield mapped by hand, because a gemstone like this demands respect and intention. The journey continued from the mine to the lapidary bench, where the rough was painstakingly cleaved, shaped and refined, until the 2.30 carat cushion form measured exactly 7.95 x 6.51 x 3.94 mm, a compact geometry that promised deep color and lively play of light.
At the heart of this piece is the stone cutting, an exacting choreography of angles and polished planes, a process that turns crystalline potential into optical brilliance. The center zircon was faceted in a mixed brilliant cut, a design chosen to marry intense fire with a balanced face up color. Each crown facet was laid out to direct light through the table, creating a window of saturated greenish blue, while the pavilion facets were calibrated to return light with lively scintillation and spark. The cutter worked to a tolerance that would satisfy the strictest of gem connoisseurs, the crown and pavilion meeting at a girdle that is neither too thin nor too heavy, the facets meeting in crisp junctions that reveal an excellent polish. Evaluated at eye level the clarity is very slightly included, meaning the stone looks clean and open to sight, a clarity that allows the vivid color to dominate the viewing experience while still carrying the character of a natural zircon. The mixed brilliant approach enhances the stone’s natural color zoning and depth, so the gem reads as luminous and alive whether seen head on or at an angle, with flash and fire balanced by a cushion silhouette that feels classic and modern at once.
The final transformation from cut gem to wearable art took place in our atelier, where metals and accent stones were thoughtfully introduced to honor the zircon’s voice. We set the center in a white gold bezel that cradles the cushion shape and maximizes the stone’s cool undertones, then paired it with two white, pear shaped natural diamonds, weighing approximately 0.60 carats in total, their clarity Very Slightly Included, graded VS1 and VS2, and their color a top grade E. These side stones sit as luminous companions, their pear forms tapered toward the central gem, creating a gentle directional light that frames the zircon and adds a refined sparkle to the silhouette. The band itself is worked in 14K yellow gold, warmed and polished to a soft glow, while the settings around the stones are in 14K white gold to enhance contrast and to focus the eye on the jewel centers. The two tone approach is deliberate, offering a visual dialogue between the cool blue green heart and the embracing warmth of gold, a modern echo of the gem’s natural palette.
Every step of the making was overseen by our master jewellers, from the final seat of the handsomely faceted zircon, to the secure and precise bezels of the pear diamonds, to the last inspections that confirm symmetry, polish and structural integrity. The result is a ring that tells a complete story, from Cambodian riverbed to the steady gaze of a lamp at the cutter’s bench, to the considered hands that soldered, set and polished until the piece met our standards. For those who appreciate the marriage of geological history and human craft, this ring offers both provenance and precision, a jewel that invites touch and reflection. If you seek an heirloom that carries the voice of the earth and the evidence of meticulous faceting, this creation from The Natural Gemstone Company stands ready to become the next chapter in someone’s life.
