From the moment this red spinel left the earth, it carried a story written in heat and time, a story that began in the storied deposits of Burma Myanmar. Miners guided by generations of knowledge found a crystal whose purity and color called for a gentle and deliberate hand, a crystal that would reveal its heart only through the careful work of a cutter who understood both the stone and light. At The Natural Gemstone Company we follow that tradition, sourcing gems with provenance and character, then moving them into the hands of cutters who listen to the stone. This 2.54 carat emerald cut spinel measures 8.93 x 7.83 x 4.51 mm, it arrived with an eye clean clarity grade when viewed at eye level, and its vivid color saturation hinted at the depth of red that would emerge once the facets were laid down and the polish perfected. The journey from mine to bezel involved multiple stages of assessment, cutting and polishing, each step chosen to honor the gem and to ensure that every facet would contribute to a final jewel with presence, depth and the kind of fire that draws the eye and holds it.
The decision to create an emerald cut for this spinel was intentional, a decision rooted in the way step cuts tame and then magnify color while choreographing light rather than simply scattering it. The emerald cut gives this stone a geometric elegance, with broad facets that form a layered hall of mirrors, allowing light to enter the table, travel across the polished planes, and return in flashes that emphasize the gem s rich red tone. Because this spinel is eye clean, the pavilion and crown can be cut with broader, longer facets, translating internal clarity into a clean, uninterrupted play of light. The excellent polish applied by our master lapidary ensures that each facet behaves like a tiny mirror, the corners and steps creating a rhythm of light and shadow that brings out subtle inner reflections, a deep glow from within rather than a surface glare. At 8.93 by 7.83 by 4.51 millimeters the proportions were selected to maximize light return without sacrificing the octagonal geometry that makes an emerald cut so distinctive, resulting in a refined silhouette that reads as both vintage inspired and modern in its clean lines.
Flanking the central spinel are natural white baguette diamonds, their straight faceted forms chosen to complement the spinel s architectural cut, their combined weight approximately 0.14 carats. With a clarity grading of VS1 VS2 and a color grade of F, these diamonds act as precise accents, catching and reflecting light across the shoulders of the ring, reinforcing the spinel s center glow while adding a crisp, cool contrast to its warm hue. Set in 18K yellow gold, the metal was chosen to embrace the stone in a warm frame, the gold s tone enhancing the vivid red while the clean bezel and gallery work allow light to reach the pavilion and escape back through the table. The setting balances security and breathability, the gallery openings permitting side light to animate the facets, and the baguettes sitting flush to the shoulders giving structural symmetry to the design. At The Natural Gemstone Company we attend to these details because brilliance is the result of many small decisions, from the mine to the cut to the exact angle of a bezel edge, and this ring was crafted to be more than an adornment, it was crafted to be a wearable story, a connection between earth, artisan, and wearer, a piece that will catch the light and the imagination every time it is turned.
