This Fire Opal, denoted as Fire Opal, Flame Opal, traces its origins to volcanic terrains in central Mexico, where its formation began millions of years ago. Silica rich fluids derived from the weathering of volcanic ash and glass percolated through fractures and voids in basaltic host rock, depositing a silica gel that gradually polymerized and lost water to form hydrated amorphous silica. Over extended geological time scales, episodes of fluid recharge, subtle changes in temperature and chemistry, and the incorporation of trace iron compounds produced a stable, transparent to translucent mass with a pronounced orange body color. Unlike opals that display play of color due to ordered silica spheres, this flame opal’s vivid orange hue arises primarily from its body color enhanced by trace iron and the density of the silica network, while meticulous natural crystallization preserved clarity and internal homogeneity. The result is a gemstone whose present appearance reflects a complex interplay of volcanic activity, sedimentary processes, and prolonged geochemical maturation.
Presented by The Natural Gemstone Company, this specimen is a transparent 5.52 carat marquise shaped Fire Opal, with precise dimensions of 19.51 by 9.92 by 7.44 millimeters, and a faceted, mixed brilliant cutting style executed to exacting standards. The marquise outline emphasizes the stone’s length to width ratio, while the mixed brilliant cut balances light return and internal brilliance across the elongated form. Assessed at eye level, the clarity grade is eye clean, indicating the absence of inclusions visible to the unaided eye, and the color intensity is rated vivid, delivering a saturated orange that remains uniform through the pavilion and crown. The polish is excellent, contributing to crisp facet junctions and optimal surface luster. No enhancement has been applied to this gem, ensuring it retains its natural state as extracted from Mexican deposits. This combination of provenance, unenhanced status, transparent body, precise dimensions, and technical cutting quality makes this fire opal a well documented example for collection and fine jewelry applications, described and supplied with full disclosure by The Natural Gemstone Company.
