Product description

This transparent 0.63 carat cushion shape pinkish red garnet measures 6.36 x 4.80 x 2.68 mm, and it presents a mixed brilliant cut that balances sparkle with depth. The clarity is graded slightly included when evaluated at eye level, and the surface displays an excellent polish. The color intensity is described as intense, conveying a saturated pinkish red that shifts subtly under different lights. There has been no enhancement applied to this specimen, and its origin is documented as Ceylon, Sri Lanka. The Natural Gemstone Company includes this gem as an example of natural crystallization and careful cutting, and the combination of dimensions, cut, and polish yields a stone that performs well in fine jewelry settings where a balance of color and light return is desired.

The story of this garnet begins deep within the Earth millions of years ago, during episodes of regional metamorphism that affected the high grade metamorphic terranes of Ceylon. Sedimentary and igneous protoliths were subjected to prolonged heating and compressional stress as tectonic plates converged, and under these conditions the constituent minerals in the rocks reequilibrated. Garnet crystals nucleated in pockets and layers where the chemistry and stress conditions favored the formation of aluminum rich silicate structures. Over long intervals, molecules of aluminum, silicon, oxygen, and a suite of trace elements organized into the dense isometric crystal lattice characteristic of garnet. Fluids circulating through fractures and grain boundaries facilitated element transport and sustained crystal growth, allowing the individual garnet to increase in size as it incorporated iron, magnesium, manganese, and in some cases chromium. The resulting crystal recorded its history as internal growth zones and inclusions, and later tectonic uplift and erosion liberated the garnet from its host rock. In Sri Lanka, secondary alluvial processes concentrated gem quality crystals in gravels, where they were eventually recovered by miners and passed along a chain of assessment and selection.

The physical attributes of this stone reflect both its geologic heritage and the choices made during cutting and polishing. The mixed brilliant cut employs both step and brilliant facets to work with the gem material in a way that maximizes light performance while maintaining weight and face up appearance. The cushion outline provides gentle shoulders and slightly rounded corners that are well suited to the 6.36 x 4.80 x 2.68 mm dimensions, and the pavilion depth of 2.68 mm supports internal reflection. The slightly included clarity grade indicates small natural features that are observable at eye level, and these inclusions are natural evidence of growth, changes in fluid composition, or minute mineral fragments that were present during crystallization. Such inclusions do not detract from the gem in the manner of artificial treatments, and in many cases they assist gemologists in confirming natural origin. The pinkish red hue arises from a balance of trace elements, and typical contributors include iron, manganese, and occasionally chromium, the relative proportions of which determine whether the garnet trends toward purplish red, pink red, or deeper red. Garnet has a relatively high refractive index compared to many common gem minerals, and this property enhances scintillation and brilliance when a stone is well cut and polished, as is evident in this specimen. The excellent polish preserves facet crispness and maximizes the optical return of light to the viewer.

From a practical and provenance perspective this garnet offers attributes that are straightforward to communicate and assess. Being untreated provides stability under normal wear conditions, and the lack of enhancement means the original color and clarity are intact as formed in nature. Its Ceylon origin is consistent with geological settings known for gem quality garnet and other gem species within high grade metamorphic terranes. The dimensions and cut make the stone suitable for a range of settings where a small but richly colored center or accent stone is required, and the cushion form adapts well to bezel, claw, or halo mounting styles. Routine care for this gem involves gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals and extreme thermal shock. When set in jewelry, the stone benefits from secure mounting that protects it from sharp impacts against hard surfaces, and periodic inspection of the setting will help preserve both the mount and the stone. The Natural Gemstone Company documents the attributes of each specimen to support informed selection, and this garnet stands as a tangible piece of deep time, a crystal that began as elemental constituents within metamorphic rock and emerged as a polished gem that retains a readable record of geological processes.
