This 1.87 carat oval white moonstone measures 9.69 x 7.23 x 3.57 mm, presented as a classic cabochon cut with an expertly controlled domed profile. The cabochon style is purposefully chosen to maximize the optical effect known as adularescence, the internal light scattering that produces the characteristic shimmering sheen. The material is transparent with a colorless color intensity, and it has a clarity grade of very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, which indicates only minimal, predominantly microscopic inclusions. The very slightly included nature of this stone preserves overall visual purity while allowing internal lamellar features to interact with light, and the excellent polish on the dome ensures minimal surface scattering and high surface reflectivity. No enhancement has been applied, so the optical behavior is wholly natural, and the origin from Ceylon Sri Lanka is consistent with the highest quality feldspar specimens from that locale.
At a structural level the shimmer and sparkle of this moonstone arise from coherent light interaction with exsolution lamellae within the potassium aluminum silicate matrix. Alternating layers of orthoclase and albite form submicroscopic planar discontinuities, and incident light is scattered and partially transmitted at these interfaces, producing a concentrated floating sheen perpendicular to the internal layering. The cabochon dome, proportioned with a 3.57 mm thickness, is cut with the optical axis oriented to align the lamellar planes under the apex, producing a broad, directional flash that travels across the oval axis as the stone is viewed from different angles. The high degree of transparency and the neutral base color allow the adularescent band to appear pure and luminous, rather than diffused by body tone. The specific lamellar spacing and minimal inclusions in this specimen yield a strong, clean band with a bluish white core and peripheral dispersion, a combination that gives it a sparkle and depth that is difficult to achieve in less well formed material. Expert lapidary control was required to center and proportion the dome so that movement produces dynamic light play rather than multiple competing flashes, and the excellent polish preserves edge definition and contrast. The Natural Gemstone Company presents this natural, unenhanced Ceylon moonstone as a technical exemplar of how crystallographic layering, cabochon geometry, and surface finish combine to produce a refined and unusually vivid adularescence.
