Product description

This specimen is a 1.45 carat Australian Black Opal presented in a freeform outline, with dimensions of 6.63 by 9.42 by 3.41 millimeters, a polished cut, intense color intensity, and an excellent polish, supplied as a doublet. The choice of a freeform profile preserves maximum play of color while allowing the cutter to follow the strongest color seams in the original rough, the result being a compact, slightly domed surface that functions like a cabochon in optical performance. As a doublet the precious opal layer is thin and mounted against a dark backing material, the backing creating a deep bodytone that replicates the appearance of solid black opal while using less precious material. Under loupe examination the surface shows a very fine final polish, executed with progressively finer abrasive grades through silicon carbide and diamond laps, culminating in a tin oxide or cerium oxide final compound to achieve the mirror finish that optimizes light transmission into the silica sphere lattice. The color palette is multi spectral, with dominant blues and greens interspersed with strong red flashes, the configuration producing broad flashes and patchy mosaic patterns rather than isolated pinfire spots, and delivering a brightness grade that can be described as vivid to intense in most viewing positions.

The optical behavior of this Black Opal doublet is strongly dependent on illumination geometry and spectral content. In direct daylight and full spectrum natural light the stone exhibits its widest and most balanced play of color, reds, oranges, greens and blues appearing simultaneously as the viewing angle and orientation change, with the dark backing maximizing contrast and perceived saturation. Under warm incandescent or halogen sources the longer wavelengths such as reds and oranges become comparatively more pronounced, giving the gem a warmer overall appearance and enhancing broad flash phenomena along the curved face. Conversely under cool LED or fluorescent light sources the shorter wavelengths, blues and greens, dominate, and fine structure within the play of color becomes more obvious, especially at oblique viewing angles where diffraction from closely packed silica spheres separates the blue and green components. Diffuse ambient light will tend to mute the brightest flashes but reveal the stone full surface patterning and subtle secondary colors, making the doublet an excellent candidate for designs where constant, softer illumination is expected. Raking light, that is a low angle light source skimming across the surface, will emphasize layering and banding of color, often producing linear or flame like color streaks as internal color patches align with the face curvature, an effect magnified by the polished dome and the high luster of the finish.

From a lapidary and setting perspective the physical proportions, particularly the 3.41 millimeter thickness, make this piece suitable for secure bezel mounting or for inlay settings where the backing can remain visible and contribute to the visual depth, the doublet construction meaning the dark backing is an intended part of the aesthetic and should not be obscured without consideration. Because the doublet architecture is a laminated assembly, setting methods that allow some ventilation at the girdle and minimize point pressure are preferable, for example a low profile bezel with a soft underlay when setting into rings, or a pendant setting with the stone slightly recessed and backed by a dark metal plate to maintain contrast. Care instructions for longevity include avoiding prolonged exposure to steam or ultrasonic cleaners, high heat sources, and solvents that could compromise the adhesive layer between the opal slice and the backing. Routine maintenance is limited to gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soap and water, drying thoroughly before storage, and avoiding direct contact with sharp blows or abrasive surfaces. Provenance from Australian fields contributes to the desirability and geological pedigree of the piece, and The Natural Gemstone Company certifies the enhancement as a doublet, provides the exact dimensions and weight, and offers guidance on optimal orientation and mounting to maximize play of color based on the individual stone geometry. If you require additional viewing angles, calibrated lighting comparisons, or recommendations for a bespoke mounting that will exploit the stone behavior under specific lighting conditions, The Natural Gemstone Company can supply further images and technical advice to ensure the gem performs as expected in the intended setting.
