From the ancient silica rich beds of Australia this Black Opal began as a slow, patient miracle of nature, layered in dark host rock and infused over millennia with the play of color that makes opal so beloved. Miners working remote fields lifted rough nodules by hand, following veins of mystery until they found a piece with the deep, opaline pulse we seek. This particular stone presented itself as an opaque 2.01 carat gem, a fancy shaped slice of color measuring 10.32 by 8.25 by 3.40 mm, a tablet cut chosen to honor the stone's natural face and to reveal the broad flashes of blue and green that run across its surface. The body tone and play are classic for Black Opal, the dark backdrop intensifying the multi color spectacle, while the tablet cut and excellent polish create a window into the layered world within. To ensure strength and to maximize the visual impact of a thin seam of precious opal, the piece was enhanced as a doublet, a traditional and skilled technique that bonds the opal to a complementary backing, preserving the stone and amplifying its color intensity without hiding its natural character.
As craftsmen at The Natural Gemstone Company inspected the doublet, they shaped the fancy form by hand, refining angles and smoothing the dome until the polish reached an excellent, reflective finish that allows light to dance across the surface. The journey from mine to market included careful documentation of origin, and a jeweler friendly profile, the tablet cut providing a stable, wearable silhouette suitable for a bezel or low profile setting, and the compact dimensions making it ideal for a unique ring or a pendant that showcases its ocean like colors. Along the way the stone carried stories of country men and women who know the land, and of the patient geology that created its depth. We present this Black Opal not only as a gem but as a talisman of a landscape, a 2.01 carat reminder of Australia’s mineral wealth, ready to be set and worn. At The Natural Gemstone Company we celebrate pieces that connect wearer and earth, and this multi color opal doublet, with its intense color intensity and excellent polish, is offered to be part of your next creation, chosen for its character, beauty, and the long journey that brought it to you.
