Millions of years ago, far below the surface of the Earth, heat and pressure coaxed magnesium and iron rich minerals to crystallize into olivine, the mineral we know as peridot. This gem formed deep within the mantle, trapped in pockets of molten rock, and then was ferried upward by sudden volcanic events that carried fragments of the primitive mantle in their flows. Over geologic time this bright green mineral lay hidden, altered only by the slow cooling of the rock that housed it, until the forces of erosion and uplift exposed seams of peridot in the mountains of Afghanistan. Local miners, following generations of tradition, recovered rough crystals that bore the unmistakable lime green glow that peridot collectors cherish. At The Natural Gemstone Company we trace this journey with respect, sourcing material that is unenhanced and true to the stone that formed in the deep Earth, preserving its natural story for the next chapter.
This particular gem is a transparent 2.52 carat asscher octagon peridot, measuring 7.54 x 7.37 x 6.05 mm, with a clarity grade described as very very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, a medium color intensity, and an excellent polish. Our master cutters translated the stone from rough to a precise asscher faceted form, creating a hall of mirrored steps that emphasizes color and clarity while maintaining generous depth and light return. No enhancement was applied, so the vivid green you see is the same color that crystallized deep in the mantle millions of years ago. The finished gem sits beautifully in a range of settings from an elegant solitaire to a sophisticated halo, its green seen differently as light travels through the step facets. When you choose this peridot from The Natural Gemstone Company you are selecting a gem with a clear provenance, timeless geology, and artisanal care, an emblem of deep time made personal through thoughtful cutting and presentation.
