This specimen is a semi transparent rutilated quartz weighing 10.12 carat, cut to a pear outline with dimensions 17.82 x 12.29 x 7.03 mm. The body color is bluish grey with medium color intensity, and the stone is graded eye clean at standard viewing distance. The inclusion fabric is dominated by fine to medium rutile needles that form predominantly parallel and slightly convergent bundles along the length of the pear, with occasional cross fiber intersections that produce a layered veining effect. Needle color reads as dark greenish to black against the bluish grey host, creating pronounced internal contrast without surface breaking inclusions, which preserves the eye clean assessment while providing strong visual texture.
The cabochon cut and well controlled dome profile are key to the gemological presentation of this piece. With a 7.03 mm height the convex surface allows internal light to refract and glide over the rutile needle planes, enhancing depth and the perception of movement as the stone is tilted. The cutter maintained tight symmetry in the pear proportions to align the dominant rutile orientation with the long axis, a technique that maximizes directional flow and aesthetic continuity in final settings. An excellent polish minimizes surface diffusion and promotes crisp light return from the dome, while a conservative pavilion thickness maintains durability without sacrificing optical transmission. The weight to dimension ratio indicates efficient rough utilization and careful lapidary control, producing a substantial 10.12 carat cabochon that remains wearable.
This rutilated quartz is natural and shows no enhancement, origin Ceylon, Sri Lanka. The lack of treatment preserves original inclusional character and color nuances, attributes sought by collectors and designers who favor untreated material. For mounting recommendations choose settings that showcase the needle orientation, such as lengthwise bezels or suspended pendants that allow light to traverse the dome. Routine care with mild detergent and a soft brush is advised, and avoid ultrasonic cleaning if set in delicate mountings.
