This transparent greyish violet spinel weighs 0.48 carat, and measures 5.02 x 4.23 x 2.92 mm in an elegant oval outline. It has a mixed brilliant cut that balances a faceted pavilion with a well proportioned crown to optimize light return, and the polish is excellent across all facets. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, with inclusions that do not materially affect its visual performance, and the color exhibits a medium intensity that reads as a refined greyish violet under standard lighting. This specimen is entirely natural, without any enhancement, and it is sourced from Ceylon Sri Lanka, a region renowned for producing fine spinel material. The Natural Gemstone Company presents this gem with accurate measurements and a focus on transparent disclosure of its characteristics.
The genesis of this spinel began deep within the Earth during prolonged episodes of regional metamorphism millions of years ago, when original protoliths were subjected to the combined effects of heat pressure and chemically active fluids. In the case of Sri Lankan spinel, formation commonly occurs in carbonate host rocks that were transformed into marble during tectonic collisions. Under those conditions aluminum rich and magnesium rich components became concentrated, and the mineral spinel crystallized from a high temperature environment where oxygen fugacity and the availability of trace elements determined hue and tone. Over extended intervals crystal nuclei slowly grew into well formed octahedral lattices that later were modified by subsequent recrystallization and minor resorption. Trace amounts of iron and other transition elements in the crystal lattice shifted the balance toward a greyish violet appearance, producing the subdued yet appealing color observed in this stone. Throughout this time scale the crystal structure developed internal features that are typical of natural spinel, including small inclusions and growth zoning that record episodes of changing conditions during growth.
After crystallization the stone experienced uplift and erosion that exposed marble horizons and released spinel crystals into secondary alluvial settings where they were concentrated by water transport. When recovered the rough material showed promise in terms of clarity and color, and careful cutting was undertaken to preserve weight while maximizing optical performance. The mixed brilliant cut chosen for this piece emphasizes scintillation from the crown facets, while the pavilion design maintains depth and color saturation, resulting in consistent performance in both diffuse and direct lighting. Its modest dimensions and precise proportions make it suitable for a variety of fine jewelry applications, including solitaire rings delicate pendants and refined stud settings, where the stone can be secured to protect its girdle and present the greyish violet tone to best effect. The Natural Gemstone Company confirms that this spinel is offered in its natural state with no treatments, and we provide measured documentation of carat weight dimensions cut and clarity to assist in appraisal and responsible mounting.
