This blue spinel began its existence deep within the earth, crystallizing within magnesium rich metasedimentary layers during a prolonged period of regional metamorphism millions of years ago. Elevated temperatures and sustained pressure encouraged the recombination of aluminum and magnesium bearing minerals, allowing spinel crystals to nucleate and grow within pockets of recrystallized marble. Over geological time, tectonic uplift and progressive erosion exposed these metamorphosed horizons, and intermittent river systems transported liberated crystals toward secondary alluvial deposits. The result is a gem that carries the imprint of a long geological journey, its crystalline lattice formed under conditions of heat and pressure, and later rounded and liberated by the slow but persistent forces of weathering. The blue tone of this spinel reflects trace element variations and the crystal field environment present during formation, producing an intense color that remained stable through the stone's subsequent history.
Presented by The Natural Gemstone Company, this specimen is a transparent 0.65 carat cushion shape blue spinel, with exact dimensions of 5.55 x 4.78 x 2.78 mm. The gem has been faceted in a mixed brilliant cut to optimize light performance and preserve weight, and it displays a clarity grade of very slightly included evaluated at eye level, which contributes to the stone's character without materially affecting its visual appeal. The color intensity is described as intense, and the polish has been executed to an excellent standard, yielding a clean, lively face up appearance. There has been no enhancement to this stone, and its origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a locality renowned for producing high quality spinel from marble hosted deposits. The combination of authentic natural formation, precise cutting, and careful finishing makes this blue spinel a well documented example of its species, suitable for collectors and designers who prioritize geological integrity and technical craftsmanship.
