From the heart of ancient metamorphic rock in Ceylon Sri Lanka this purple spinel began its long journey, formed over millennia by heat and pressure and carried by rivers to the gem hunters who know these hills by instinct. Each rough crystal that reaches our cutters at The Natural Gemstone Company carries the story of its place of origin, and this particular stone revealed itself as a clean, transparent crystal that responded beautifully to the emerald cut. We brought this specimen to life as a 0.65 carat emerald cut, with dimensions of 5.56 x 4.22 x 3.17 mm, a clarity grade of very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, a dark color intensity, and an excellent polish. No enhancement was applied, so what you see is pure Ceylon spinel, faceted to emphasize the deep violet purple that can appear almost indigo in shadow and richly amethyst in reflected light. The emerald cut gives it an architectural presence, long step facets that create a hall of mirrors effect, a subtle flash that rewards close inspection, and a quiet elegance that feels both vintage and modern at once.
Imagine this gem as the center of a custom creation, paired with complementary stones that elevate its mood without stealing its voice. A fine halo of tiny white diamonds or brilliant cut white sapphires will lift the purple and create lively contrast, lending sparkle while preserving the spinel as the focal point. For a bolder palette, two small tsavorite garnets or mint tourmalines set as flanking stones will introduce a fresh green counterpoint, celebrating the natural color wheel in one jewel. To soften the drama, pale pink sapphires or champagne diamonds can add warmth, especially set in rose gold, where the metal will echo the purple tones and create a romantic glow. For a clean contemporary look, set the stone in platinum or white gold with tapered baguette shoulders, or place it in a low bezel on a minimalist band for everyday wear. As a pendant, a simple bezel or four prong setting will allow the emerald cut to read clearly against the skin, while a pavé collar of small diamonds or sapphires will frame it like a painted window. Wherever it is placed, this Ceylon purple spinel will carry its origin and its cut with dignity, inviting a design that honors natural history and refined craftsmanship.
