Product description

The Natural Gemstone Company presents a transparent cushion shaped pinkish purple spinel weighing 1.06 carat, measuring 6.11 by 5.44 by 3.99 millimeters, with a mixed brilliant faceting style. The cutter has employed a classical cushion outline with a modified brilliant crown and pavilion to balance color saturation with optical return. The table facet has been proportioned to allow light entry that favors internal color saturation while the pavilion facet angles have been calibrated to optimize scintillation for a stone of this depth. Clarity is graded as slightly included at eye level, which in this example contributes character without materially reducing brilliance. Color intensity is evaluated as intense, and the polish is excellent, resulting in crisp facet junctions and minimal surface abrasion. The stone is natural with no enhancement, and provenance is Burma, which is an important identifier for collectors who value trace element profiles associated with that region.

From a lapidary perspective the mixed brilliant cut present in this cushion spinel demonstrates technical choices aimed at maximizing return from an isotropic material. Mixed brilliant cutting combines a faceted crown that includes star and kite facets with a pavilion that echoes brilliant pavilion geometry, yet the cutter has slightly elongated pavilion facets to deepen body color without creating windowing. Facet symmetry is tight, and the girdle thickness is even, which aids in secure setting and minimizes the risk of nibbling during mounting. The excellent polish translates to efficient specular reflection from each facet face, increasing apparent brightness under direct light. Slight inclusions are mostly internal and do not form a dominant crystal or feather near the girdle, so the gem maintains an open face up appearance. The cutter made deliberate trade offs between table size and crown height to preserve the intense pinkish purple hue characteristic of Burmese spinel while still delivering lively facet play.

Optically this spinel shows the typical properties of spinel family gems, with strong vitreous luster and an isotropic response that eliminates double refraction related phase separation. Spinel generally has a refractive index in the vicinity of one point seven two and modest dispersion, which means that while it does not exhibit the fire typically associated with higher dispersion stones, the precision of the brilliant facets produces focused flashes of white light and color that read as lively and refined. Compared to corundum varieties such as ruby and pink sapphire, corundum displays a higher refractive index and similar or slightly higher dispersion, which can translate to a different kind of brilliance and a higher degree of hardness. Compared to garnet species, which may have higher refractive indices and more pronounced pleochroism in some types, spinel offers a clean, singular color without directional color shifts. Compared to fire opal, noted here as Fire Opal, the two are fundamentally different. Fire Opal is an amorphous silica based gem with lower refractive index and softer hardness, and it often shows vivid internal body color and sometimes play of color rather than facet derived brilliance. The pinkish purple spinel will present more stable facet driven reflection, while a Fire Opal will emphasize translucency and internal glow.

For practical usage this 1.06 carat cushion spinel is well suited for use as a principal center stone in a ring or for a pendant where its dimensions and depth to face ratio present a balanced presence. The combination of intense color and excellent polish makes it a compelling choice for settings that take advantage of table up viewing, such as bezel or four prong settings that allow the pavilion to breathe. Durability is high for daily wear due to spinel hardness of about eight on the Mohs scale, and the isotropic nature reduces concerns about cleavage. Because the gem is unenhanced and of Burmese origin it is of special interest to collectors who value natural state material. Care instructions are straightforward, using mild soap and a soft brush, avoiding heat and harsh chemicals that can affect other materials in the mounting. The Natural Gemstone Company stands behind the documented origin and the unenhanced status, and this cushion pinkish purple spinel represents a technical and aesthetic choice for buyers who value exacting cut work, reliable optical performance, and a richly saturated yet stable color.
