Product description

This Burmese cushion spinel from The Natural Gemstone Company is a precision faceted gem, weighing 1.53 carat, with finished dimensions of 7.06 by 6.02 by 4.06 millimeters. The cutting style is faceted, executed as a mixed brilliant cut that combines a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a modified pavilion geometry to maximize both scintillation and face up color. The stone presents an intense pinkish purple hue with high saturation and excellent transparency, noted as transparent under standard viewing. The gem shows very slightly included clarity when evaluated at eye level, and it has received an excellent polish rating, indicating crisp facet junctions and smooth facet planes that contribute to strong light return. The stone is natural and untreated, enhancement free, with provenance recorded as Burma, Myanmar, a region historically synonymous with the finest spinel material.

From a lapidary perspective the cushion outline and mixed brilliant schema create a balance between large, lively flashes and smaller pinpoint scintillation. The crown has been proportioned to allow a generous table that opens the color without washing it out, while the pavilion depth, at approximately sixty two percent of the stone s average diameter, supports optimal internal reflection and dispersion. This proportioning yields a rich face up color that reads as pinkish purple with a distinct purplish bias under daylight and a warmer, slightly more pink tone under incandescent light. The excellent polish ensures that the facets behave as intended, producing sharp reflective patterns across the table and crown facets, and the moderate girdle thickness supports secure setting without adding unnecessary weight. These cutting choices reflect an intentional intent to preserve optical performance while respecting the natural crystal morphology and inclusional characteristics of the rough.

Clarity characteristics have been conservatively described as very slightly included at eye level, indicating that minor internal features are present but do not detract from the gem s overall transparency or brilliance when set. Under magnification these inclusions are small and localized, allowing the spinel to present a clean visual field to the naked eye, a highly desirable attribute in a stone of this color and size. Spinel s crystalline hardness, approximately eight on the Mohs scale, endows this piece with the durability to be incorporated into rings, pendants, and other daily wear pieces, provided standard care is observed. The combination of a well executed mixed brilliant cut, precise facet alignment, and the reported excellent polish produce a gem that performs with lively return and controlled dispersion, making it suitable for settings that showcase its cushion shape and intense color, while protecting it from impulsive hard knocks.

As context for collectors and designers, Burmese spinel carries a storied heritage, often found in historic regalia and once commonly mistaken for ruby in imperial treasuries because of its saturated hues and brilliance. Spinel from Myanmar has been prized for centuries, mounted into signet rings, brooches, and crowns, valued both for its color stability and its pleasing optical properties. For those considering complementary stones, Fire Opal is an opal variety characterized by warm body colors ranging from golden yellow to deep orange and red, typically transparent to translucent, and composed of hydrated silica. Fire Opal often exhibits internal glow and occasional play of color, but it requires different handling than spinel because its hardness is lower, approximately five and a half to six and a half on the Mohs scale, and it can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes and household chemicals. When designing jewelry that pairs this pinkish purple spinel with Fire Opal, it is advisable to select protective settings for the opal such as bezels, while using prongs or a secure bezel to display the spinel s table and cushion silhouette. The Natural Gemstone Company can advise on matched color palettes and setting strategies to showcase contrast between the cool purplish tones of the spinel and the warm fire of the opal, and we provide detailed provenance and enhancement disclosures to support responsible purchasing. For technical consultations on mounting, cut orientation, or matching with other gem types, The Natural Gemstone Company is available to assist with bespoke design recommendations and certification for this untreated Burmese spinel.
