A single crystal born in the storied alluvial gravels of Burma, Myanmar traveled from riverbed to hand with a patience that honors its origin, and emerged as a transparent 2.83 carat round purplish pink spinel that sings of ancient earth and careful craft. From its discovery the rough stone showed a clarity grade very slightly included evaluated at eye level and a medium color intensity that hinted at a warm, lively personality waiting to be released. Unheated and unenhanced, the spinel kept every nuance of its natural color and internal character, which allowed our cutters to read its inner story and decide how best to reveal it. At The Natural Gemstone Company we trace each facet back to its source, and this gem came to us with dimensions of 8.49 by 8.33 by 5.79 millimeters, a round shape that invites symmetry, balance and a timeless setting.
The cutter chose a faceted mixed brilliant cut and an excellent polish to translate the stone rare clarity and medium saturation into vivid brilliance and scintillation. The mixed brilliant design marries a precisely angled crown with a pavilion geometry that returns light in broad flashes and lively pinpoints, making the purplish pink tones appear at once deep and airy. The slightly shallower pavilion relative to typical proportions, combined with a well sized table and carefully aligned crown facets, encourages internal reflection and creates a lively dance of light when the gem moves, while the excellent polish sharpens every reflection and allows the eye to read the stone as pure color and fire. Because the spinel is natural and untreated, there is no diffusion or masking of light, so each facet becomes a window into genuine Burmese color. This gemstone lays ready to become a centerpiece, whether mounted to celebrate a milestone, to carry a personal story, or to be set in a design that honours both the earth from which it came and the human hands that refined it.
