Product description

This 3.82 carat cushion shaped purplish blue spinel from Burma, provided by The Natural Gemstone Company, is defined by precise proportions and deliberate cutting choices that emphasize both color saturation and light return. The stone measures 10.60 by 9.28 by 5.03 millimeters, yielding a total depth of 50.6 percent, a proportion that sits squarely in the range that maximizes face up color while maintaining lively scintillation. The cutter executed a modern mixed brilliant cut, combining a brilliant style crown with a modified pavilion. This faceting strategy creates a complex interplay of small brilliant facets on the crown to produce dispersion and scintillation, while the pavilion geometry is tuned to enhance color saturation and windowing control. Facet junctions are crisp and the symmetry is closely controlled, contributing to an excellent polish grade which results in mirror clean facet faces and strong perceptible contrast that reads well in daylight and artificial light.

Color and optical behavior are central to this gem, and the term purplish blue in this context reflects a dominant blue hue with a measurable leaning toward violet in certain light angles. The intensity is classified as intense, meaning the gem presents a strong, saturated tone across the table without heavy darkening that would suppress brilliance. Spinel is singly refractive, and this specimen displays the characteristic single optic orientation with no significant pleochroism, so the face up appearance remains consistent as the stone is rotated. Light performance is therefore dominated by the cut geometry and the balance between pavilion depth and crown facets. The combination of a mixed brilliant design and the 50.6 percent depth produces both lively facet scintillation and controlled light leakage, so the gem maintains rich body color while exhibiting pinpoint and broad facet reflections as the viewing angle changes. The stone has undergone standard heat treatment to stabilize and optimize color, a routinely accepted enhancement that does not materially affect the integrity of the crystal or its refractive and density properties.

Clarity is assessed at very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, and this inventory of internal features functions as a diagnostic fingerprint rather than a defect in the conventional sense. Under magnification at ten times magnification, one can observe a discrete population of internal crystal inclusions, a few angular negative crystal cavities, and fine reflective platelets oriented along growth planes. There are localized healed feather features that display as fingerprint like networks under close inspection, and subtle growth zoning that manifests as faint, oriented color banding when backlit. These inclusion types are consistent with natural origin and are useful for provenance and identity, because the pattern, morphology, and spatial distribution of inclusions are inherently unique to each crystal batch. In this Burmese example, the inclusion assemblage and growth zoning are consistent with material recovered from historical spinel bearing alluvial sources in Myanmar, and they serve as reliable identifiers for gemological documentation when combined with refractive index and specific gravity measurements.

From a craftsmanship and investment perspective, this spinel represents a considered balance between natural character and lapidary refinement, offered by The Natural Gemstone Company with full disclosure of origin and treatment. The cutter prioritized retention of weight and color saturation, evident in the slightly deeper pavilion planes that favor intense face up color, while the brilliant crown faceting preserves lively scintillation. The excellent polish and tight facet symmetry enhance durability at mounting girdles and prongs, and the overall dimensions make the stone suitable for a variety of fine jewelry applications, particularly settings that allow light to interact with the crown and pavilion, such as semi open or four prong configurations. Collectors who value traceable origin, a measurable inclusion signature, and a well executed mixed brilliant cut will find this 3.82 carat Burmese purplish blue spinel to be a technically thoughtful and visually rewarding example.
