Product description

This 7.44 carat violet tanzanite from Tanzania is presented in a classic cushion outline with dimensions of 15.40 x 11.06 x 5.33 mm, polished to an excellent finish. The cutter employed a mixed brilliant strategy that combines a faceted crown with a pavilion designed to maximize internal return and scintillation. The table size has been proportioned to balance brilliance and color saturation while the crown and pavilion angles have been selected to take advantage of tanzanite's optical properties. At face up inspection the stone reads as intensely colored, and the gem remains transparent with a clarity grade described as very very slightly included evaluated at eye level. The overall symmetry and precise facet junctions contribute materially to the gem's even light distribution, and the heat treatment applied is a stable enhancement used to remove brown zoning and to develop the characteristic violet blue character associated with fine tanzanite.

From a structural optics perspective this specimen performs exceptionally. Tanzanite is trichroic and shows strong pleochroism, and this crystal exhibits pronounced shifts between violet and blue depending on the viewing axis. Its refractive index sits approximately in the range of 1.69 to 1.70 which yields a lively return of white light and spectral colors when combined with the cutter's mixed brilliant faceting. The gem also shows measurable birefringence, which in controlled doses enhances the perceived depth rather than producing unwanted doubling when the pavilion and crown angles are well executed. In practical terms the mixed brilliant design channels light into a controlled array of reflections that interact with the material's intrinsic pleochroism, producing a dynamic play of violet flashes and sapphire like blue flashes as the stone is rotated under light.

The cushion silhouette offers both a generous face up area and a structure that supports deep pavilion engineering without compromising table presence, and this balance is central to the stone's unmatched sparkle. The mixed brilliant pavilion returns light through a network of kite and star facets below the girdle and through triangular and trapezoidal facets above it, creating a multilayered scintillation pattern. Those facets act like micro mirrors that catch and re emit light in discrete bursts, so that the viewer perceives a combination of brilliance which is the white flash and scintillation which is the localized sparkling. When this facet architecture meets the gem's natural pleochroism the result is a three dimensional luminosity, where flashes of intense violet appear within fields of deep blue, giving the sensation of color depth and motion that is difficult to duplicate in gems lacking tanzanite's optical complexity.

Clarity is a crucial component of the visual equation and this stone's very very slightly included grade evaluated at eye level indicates that inclusions are minimal and do not interfere with light pathways under typical viewing conditions. Small crystallographic inclusions that do exist serve selectively to scatter light and can increase scintillation without causing cloudiness, provided they are well placed and not concentrated in the table window. The excellent polish contributes by minimizing surface diffusion and preserving crisp facet reflections, while the precise polishing of facet junctions ensures maximal internal reflections and minimal light leakage at the girdle. The heat treatment applied to this tanzanite is industry standard, controlled and permanent, and it stabilizes the violet to blue color by altering chromium and vanadium oxidation states in the crystal lattice without compromising structural integrity.

The provenance and craftsmanship together define the final performance of this gem, and The Natural Gemstone Company presents this tanzanite with a focus on technical fidelity and practical considerations for setting and wear. Originating from Tanzania it displays the geographic signature of the Merelani region with intense color saturation and crystalline clarity. Given its Mohs hardness near 6.5 to 7 practical mounting advice favours protective settings for high exposure areas and the mixed brilliant cushion profile adapts well to bezel or semi bezel mounts that preserve the pavilion geometry and protect the girdle. For connoisseurs seeking a stone where material properties are amplified by precision cutting this violet tanzanite offers an optical signature defined by strong pleochroism, a refractive index conducive to lively return, carefully controlled birefringence, and masterful facet execution, all of which come together to produce a sparkle and color depth that are genuinely distinctive.
