From the ancient metamorphic hills of Ceylon, Sri Lanka comes a singular cabochon of golden brown tiger eye that began as layers of crocidolite transformed into shimmering quartz, preserved by time and heat. This 4.25 carat round cabochon measures 10.04 x 10.07 x 5.48 mm, with an excellent polish that highlights a silky chatoyant band that sweeps across its surface. Evaluated at eye level the stone is opaque, natural with no enhancement, and its warm golden bands evoke sunlit wood and the sight of light sliding across a tiger eye. At The Natural Gemstone Company we trace each piece back to its origin, and this specimen carries the story of Sri Lankan hands that extracted rough nodules from ancient alluvial deposits, and of master cutters who shaped and polished this cabochon to reveal that distinctive eye.
In the workshop the cutter chose a round cabochon profile to maximize the cat eye effect, balancing depth and dome so the chatoyancy animates with movement. Tiger eye is a variety of quartz, and its position on the Mohs scale is seven, which means it is significantly harder than common ornamental minerals like calcite and feldspar, and offers better scratch resistance than many softer materials. Compared to benchmark gemstones the difference is clear, diamond is ten and will resist virtually all abrasion, ruby and sapphire are nine and are extremely durable, topaz is eight and is harder than quartz, while quartz at seven provides reliable everyday wear for rings, pendants and bracelets when set and cared for properly. Because this gem is natural and unenhanced we recommend settings that protect the dome from direct sharp impacts and routine gentle cleaning with warm water and mild soap to preserve the polish and chatoyancy. This golden brown 4.25 carat tiger eye from Ceylon offered by The Natural Gemstone Company is a tactile connection to geological time and artisan craft, ready to become a centerpiece that will age gracefully with mindful wear.
