Product description

This offering from The Natural Gemstone Company is a transparent white topaz of 2.96 carat weight, cut into a classic oval shape with exact dimensions of 9.11 x 7.24 x 5.79 mm, and originating from Ceylon Sri Lanka. The cutter employed a mixed brilliant faceting scheme, integrating a brilliant style crown with a complementary pavilion facet architecture to balance light performance and weight retention. The stone evaluates as near colorless in body tone, and carries an eye clean clarity grade when observed at normal viewing distances. The surface finish is of excellent polish, producing crisp facet junctions and sharp facet mirrors. The gem has been irradiated to stabilize and enhance its color, a standard and controlled enhancement method for topaz that is disclosed and stable under normal wear conditions. These fundamental metrics give a clear technical profile for appraisal and design planning, and they inform setting decisions that will optimize the stone face up appearance in jewelry.

Inclusions in this specimen act as natural identifiers, effectively serving as an internal fingerprint that confirms origin and growth history while adding character to the material. Although the gem is eye clean, careful loupe and microscope inspection may reveal hallmark features such as faint healed fractures, minute crystal inclusions, or thin oriented growth planes that are typical for topaz formed in pegmatitic or hydrothermal environments. These features are usually subvisible at normal viewing distances, but under magnification they provide crucial provenance information and assist gemological authentication. Rather than detracting from value, such internal markers are prized by connoisseurs because they are unique to each crystal and cannot be perfectly replicated. For gem cutters and restorers, knowledge of inclusion patterns informs decisions about facet placement and polishing strategy to avoid stress concentrations that can exacerbate internal weaknesses during setting.

The mixed brilliant cut on this oval topaz is executed with attention to optical optimization relative to topaz material properties. Topaz has a refractive index near 1.62 and modest birefringence, and dispersion that is low compared with gem species such as diamond. The cutter therefore employs a slightly deeper pavilion profile and a crown geometry composed of star, bezel, and upper girdle facets that create controlled light return and scintillation without relying on strong fire. The recorded depth of 5.79 mm yields a depth ratio near seventy point eight percent relative to the average of length and width, which produces a strong face up presence and a lively facet pattern in the oval outline. Facet symmetry is precise, with well aligned girdle curvature and consistent table proportioning that maintain optical symmetry along the major and minor axes. Excellent polish ensures minimal surface abrasion, preserving the topaz luster and facilitating clean photographic and retail presentation. For designers, the stability of the irradiated coloration and the eye clean clarity permit confident placement in prong or bezel settings with predictable light behavior.

For collectors or designers seeking complementary materials, we also provide technical information about White Opal, which pairs attractively with white topaz for contrast and tactile balance. White Opal is a hydrated silica gem with an opalescent body color that ranges from pale white to cream, and it frequently exhibits internal play of color due to ordered silica spheres. The material has a lower refractive index and a softer Mohs hardness compared with topaz, and therefore requires different handling and setting strategies. When combining White Opal with white topaz in a single piece, jewelers should consider protective settings for the opal, and exploit the higher refractive index and crisp facet reflections of the topaz to accentuate the opal sheen. At The Natural Gemstone Company we can provide matched sets and technical guidance on setting and care for combinations that feature both white topaz and White Opal, ensuring that each component is presented for optimum optical interaction and long term durability.
