This pear shaped, transparent 2.13 carat tourmaline from Ceylon, presented by The Natural Gemstone Company, is cut to precise dimensions of 9.30 x 6.77 x 5.67 mm and executed in a faceted mixed brilliant style. The mixed brilliant treatment combines a brilliant-cut crown to maximize scintillation and a faceted pavilion that moderates light return for saturation control, producing bright, well-defined flashes across the table and facets. The stone exhibits intense color intensity in a greenish brown hue with notable pleochroic behavior typical of tourmaline, shifting subtly between greener and browner tones as the orientation changes, which is visually emphasized by the cutter’s facet geometry. Clarity is described as very very slightly included at eye level, effectively appearing eye-clean with only minute internal features that do not interrupt transparency or the gem’s strong light performance. The polish is excellent, with crisp facet junctions and a smooth surface that enhances both brilliance and the apparent depth of color. No enhancement has been applied to this material, confirming a natural color and structural integrity consistent with premium Sri Lankan tourmaline.
From a gemological and practical wear perspective, this tourmaline occupies a hardness range of approximately 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. For comparison, diamond ranks at 10, sapphire and ruby (corundum) at 9, and quartz at 7. This places tourmaline as harder than common silicates such as quartz but softer than corundum and much softer than diamond, meaning it is robust for rings, pendants, and everyday jewelry if set and handled appropriately. The measured proportions yield a depth percentage of roughly 70 percent relative to the average diameter, a proportion that concentrates color saturation while maintaining efficient light return thanks to the mixed brilliant design. Refractive index ranges for tourmaline are approximately 1.624 to 1.644 with birefringence in the order of 0.014 to 0.020, and a specific gravity near 3.06, all consistent with natural elbaite-group material from Sri Lanka. For longevity we recommend protective settings such as bezels or partial bezels for high-impact rings, and routine cleaning with warm soapy water rather than aggressive ultrasonic or steam treatments to preserve polish and prevent damage to any delicate inclusions, however few.
