This transparent 2.75 carat oval red tourmaline measures 10.17 x 8.23 x 5.30 mm, with a depth percentage of approximately 52.1 percent, and presents a mixed brilliant cut executed to exacting standards. The mixed brilliant design combines a brilliant style crown with a predominantly step and modified brilliant pavilion, creating a controlled interplay between large light return facets and narrower contrast facets. This configuration preserves the stone's intense color intensity while optimizing return of white and colored light, producing strong overall brilliance without sacrificing saturation. Clarity is graded as very slightly included at eye level, and the cutter has oriented the table and crown facets to minimize the visual impact of internal features, using facet junctions and precise pavilion shaping to channel light around minor inclusions rather than through them. The polish is excellent, indicating careful final lapidary work with consistent facet symmetry and clean facet edges, which enhances specular reflection and surface brightness.
From an optical performance perspective this tourmaline demonstrates the benefits of proportionally balanced cutting for richly colored material. The moderately shallow crown angles paired with a slightly extended pavilion girdle junction create a bright face up presentation, preserving the deep red hue from Mozambique while allowing lively scintillation when the stone moves. The mixed brilliant pavilion limits windowing by breaking the lower light return into smaller light packets, which increases apparent fire and contrast without introducing excessive darkness or banding. Heat treatment has been applied to stabilize and intensify the red tone, a common and accepted enhancement that improves color homogeneity and overall market appeal. The cutter has also maintained excellent symmetry and a well centered table, factors that contribute to even light distribution across the oval outline and consistent optical performance in prong or bezel settings. This specimen is offered by The Natural Gemstone Company, and its combination of size, cut quality, color intensity, and clarity makes it an outstanding candidate for a high end ring or pendant where controlled brilliance and saturated color are the primary design goals.
